About NDA Exam
The NDA is a joint academy for the Indian Armed Forces and the admissions are made through a written exam conducted by UPSC. This is followed by extensive interviews. This exam is mandatory in order to pursue training in respective fields.

THE NATIONAL DEFENCE ACADEMY also called as NDA Is a joint Service academy of the Indian Armed Forces, where cadets of all the three services i.e. the Army, the Navy and the Air Force are trained together before they go for further training to their respective service academies. Examination is conducted by UPSC (UNION PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION).

What is SSB?
The Service Selection Board is set up by the Ministry of Defense which undertakes the SSB Interview to assess prospective or the aspirant for recruitment in the Army, Navy and Air Force. The benchmarks on which the candidates are evaluated include intelligence, observation, presence of mind personality, compatibility and potential. Hence, mental preparation holds prominence over physical preparation, although physical fitness will be an added advantage.
Unmarried graduates who clear the Combined Defense Services Examination conducted by the UPSC are selected for the SSB Interview.
- NavalAcademy : A bachelor’s degree in engineering.
- AirForceAcademy : A degree in B.Sc. with Physics & Mathematics; B.E. and B. Tech.
- IndianMilitaryAcademyand Officers’TrainingAcademy : Degree or equivalent from a recognised university.
Name of the post: After medical checkup and training, the candidates are inducted as Commissioned Officers.Notifications: Candidates are intimated for the SSB interview through call letters. In case call letter is not received on time after clearing the UPSC exam, the candidate must immediately contact the concerned office.
Schedule of SSB Examination
The five-day personality and intelligence test schedule is as under:
- Day 1: Basic Intelligence Test
- Day 2: Psychological Test
- Day 3 & Day 4: The Group Testing Officers (GTO) Activities
- Day 5: Conference
Personal Interview (PI) can be taken on any day between second to fourth days.
On the first day of the schedule, basic intelligence and verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills are evaluated. You are asked to see a picture of thirty seconds duration and describe it in a story form. Later, group discussions are held in batches to select the most suitable story. To do well in this section, go through the last few years’ question papers to get an idea. Solve papers of different aptitude tests. Get involved in GDs and debates whenever you get time. These will improve your verbal and non-verbal skills.
Practice writing & analyzing:
Practice writing about anything you see, for instance, the boy playing in the park or the girl on a school bus. Write small stories and monitor your timing. The story should include seven parameters such as sex, mood, age, character, past, present and future of a situation that the character of your story is in. Analyze the story.
The second day is considered very important. Thematic Appreciation Test (TAT), Word Association Test (WAT), Situation Reaction Test (SRT) and Self Description are undertaken, all of which are part of psychological process. These are all general psychology tests that demand your extensive attention and concentration.
Prepare for it beforehand. The psychologists usually look for your:
- Ability to self analyze
- Aim in life and determination
- Thinking and mentality regarding parents, family, friends, neighbours, teachers and others.
- Perception of how your parents, family, friends, neighbours, teachers and others analyse you.
Preparations for next two days:
The Group Testing Officers (GTO) activities conducted on the third and fourth days include various indoor and outdoor group activities like Group Discussion, Group Obstacle Race, Group Planning and Progressive Group Tasks. The individual tasks consist of Individual Lecturette, Individual Obstacles and Command Tasks. These tests are conducted to evaluate you as a team player in various situations as also as an individual. It also assesses your leadership qualities and the way you express yourself. Perform all the tasks in a calm and composed manner.
The officers can take your Personal Interview (PI) on any day between second to fourth days, so be mentally prepared for it.
The fifth day generally comprises closing address by the board’s Deputy President, conference and announcement of results, followed by dispersal.
For SSB, it is not important that you should be a highly intelligent person but should be strong, mature and posses a well-developed personality.
It is essential to keep fit so that you can conduct all the physical activities with ease. A good heath will also help you to get a clearance in the medical tests.
SSB Syllabus 2016 Written Exam
General Intelligence & Reasoning
Analytical aptitude and ability to observe and distinguish patterns will be tested through questions principally of non-verbal type. This component may include questions on

General Knowledge and General Awareness
Questions in this component will be aimed at testing the candidate’s general awareness of the environment around him. Questions will also be designed to test knowledge of:

- Economic Scene
- General Polity
- Indian Constitution
- Scientific Research etc
This paper will include questions on problems relating to:
- Number Systems
- Computation of Whole Numbers
- Decimals and Fractions
- Relationship between Numbers
- Fundamental arithmetical operations
- Ratio and Proportion
- Profit and Loss
- Time and Distance
- Ratio and Time
- Time and Work etc
English / Hindi
Candidates’ capability to understand Basic English/ Hindi, his basic comprehension and writing ability, etc. would be examined through this section.
Exam Pattern for Constable
The Written examination will consist of only one objective type paper containing 100 questions and carrying 100 marks. Total time allotted to the paper is 2 hours.

All questions will be of Objective Multiple Choice Types. Questions will be set bilingually in Hindi and English in Parts A, B and C. Candidates are required to attempt either Hindi or English section of Part ‘D’ of the question paper.
Exam Pattern for Constable (Driver)
Exam consist multiple choice objective type question of total 100 marks. Maximum Time allotted to the paper is 2 Hours.

Recruitment of candidates to Army, Navy and Air force wings of the National Defence Academy (NDA), is through National Defence Academy Entrance Exam which happens twice a year.
What After NDA?
After completing their three/four years training in Khadakwasla pune, they will obtain a degree from JNTU in B.Sc/ B.Sc computer science/ B.A. post which trade training is given and their career starts in Indian army lieutenant and in navy as Sub Lieutenant and those who selected air force start their career flying officer. Cadets continue in the post as captain, major, carnal or brigade and can grow to the stage of Chief of army staff, admiral and air chief marshal.

The entrance for National Defense Academy comprises of a Written Exam followed by and Intelligence and Personality Test.

The age limit for the NDA exam is 18 years, which is as per the UPSC guidelines. Minimum education qualification required is 10+2 or equivalent for Army and 10+2 with Physics and Math for Navy and Air Force from a recognized education board. The candidate should be the citizen of India and only unmarried males can apply for this exam.
